Fish passage post-construction issues: analysis of distribution, attraction and passage efficiency metrics at the Baguari Dam fish ladder to approach the problem Neotropical Ichthyology
Silva,Luiz Gustavo Martins da; Nogueira,Lorena Bettinelli; Maia,Bruno Pereira; Resende,Lucas Borges de.
Fish passages are considered the oldest management tool used to minimize the impact of blocking fish migratory routes by hydroelectric power plants. However, fish passages are being installed without specific criteria in Brazil, with severe consequences to the conservation of the local fish fauna. Therefore, basic data gathered for fish passages already constructed could contribute to define operational rules, in addition to offer subsidies to decision-making and design of future facilities. Thus, the fish ladder of Baguari Dam was evaluated regarding temporal distribution, attraction, and ascension of the local fish fauna. A total of 20 fish samples were conducted immediately downstream of the dam and inside the fish ladder, from January 2010 to June...

Flow structure and seasonalityin the Hebridean slope current ArchiMer
Souza, Aj; Simpson, Jh; Harikrishnan, M; Malarkey, J.
The intensity, structure and variability of the slope current have been determined from 16 months of observations with Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP) and conventional current meters on a cross-slope section at the Hebridean shelf edge during the Shelf Edge Study (SES) programme. After removal of the tidal signals, the mean flow over the upper slope is found to be closely parallel to the topography with speeds of . 20 cmEs.1. The flow extends down to a depth of 500 m and is predominantly barotropic, especially in winter when the flow is practically uniform between 350 m and the surface. In summer, there is a significant baroclinic component with a pronounced maximum in current at a depth of about 200 m but more than 80% of the kinetic energy is...

Flower Power at the Dutch Flower Auctions? Application of an Inverse Almost Ideal Demand System AgEcon
Steen, Marie.
Information on price-quantity relationships will enable flower producers to reduce risk and raise profits through better timing of rotations as well as better utilization of limited greenhouse space. The present paper presents econometric evidence on such price-quantity relationships for major species of cut flowers at the Dutch flower auctions. Specifically, an inverse linear approximate almost ideal demand model with seasonal adjustments is applied. This paper is introducing trigonometric functions as a flexible and inexpensive alternative that outperforms standard seasonal dummies. Major findings are that all flexibilities (quantity elasticities) are strongly significant. Own price flexibilities are negative as expected. The own flexibilities vary...

Flux dynamics of planktic foraminiferal tests in the south-eastern Bay of Biscay (northeast Atlantic margin) ArchiMer
Kuhnt, Tanja; Howa, Helene; Schmidt, Sabine; Marie, Louis; Schiebel, Ralf.
The temporal and water depth related dynamics of planktic foraminiferal fluxes in the south-eastern Bay of Biscay are discussed for a two year sampling period (June 2006-June 2008). Two sediment traps deployed at 800 m and 1700 m water depth at a mooring in 2000 m of water depth, were analyzed for the flux of planktic foraminiferal species >150 mu m, in comparison with the total mass flux. Total flux of planktic foraminifera shows seasonal maxima in spring/early summer (>2000 Ind.m(-2) d(-1)) and minima from late summer through winter (<10 Ind.m(-2) d(-1)). The flux of planktic foraminiferal tests in the intermediate to deep water column at the inner Bay of Biscay comprises an intermittent and regionally variable signal of seasonal surface water...

Follicular-Stromal Interaction in Mare Ovary During the Reproductive Cycle International Journal of Morphology
Smok S,Carolina; Rojas R,Mariana.
Ovogenesis and foliculogenesis in the mare differ from other farm animals and therefore, gamete manipulation, in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer have been very difficult. The histologic traits of ovaries from 12 mares, in estrus and diestrus were studied. Number and size of follicules and corpora lutea were recorded. The ovarian stroma was evaluated using the pricosirius technique for collagen. A simple morphometric analysis was done using computerized scanner programs. During late estrus, one dominant follicle (46 ± 4mm) is seen. The surrounding stroma contains collagen I and III. By the end of the estrus, one hemorrhagic follicle is seen, plus one or two small follicle (2 mm in size). In early diestrus there is a corpus luteum (43-60 mm) and some...

Forecasting Corn Futures Volatility in the Presence of Long Memory, Seasonality and Structural Change AgEcon
Wang, Xiaoyang; Garcia, Philip.
Price volatility in the corn market has changed considerably globalization and stronger linkages to the energy complex. Using data from January 1989 through December 2009, we estimate and forecast the volatility in the corn market using futures daily prices. Estimates in a Fractional Integrated GARCH framework identify the importance of long memory, seasonality, and structural change. Recursively generated forecasts for up to 40-day horizons starting in January 2005 highlight the importance of seasonality, and long memory specifications which perform well at more distant horizons particularly with rising volatility. The forecast benefits of allowing for structural change in an adaptive framework are more difficult to identify except at more distant...

Geographical and seasonal distributions of the seedeaters Sporophila bouvreuil and Sporophila pileata (aves: Emberizidae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Machado,Érika; Silveira,Luís Fábio.
Many species in the genus Sporophila are migratory. Migration patterns, while poorly studied, may be influenced by seed production which can be very seasonal in some regions. The distribution of S. bouvreuil extends from the Amazon and Suriname south through a large part of the open regions of Brazil. Sporophila pileata, on the other hand, is found in southeastern and southern Brazil as well as Argentina and Paraguay. Both of these species migrate, but their movement patterns are poorly known. To better understand the geographical and the seasonal distributions of S. bouvreuil and S. pileata, we grouped the records into two categories: the breeding season (September to March) and the putative migration season (April to August). We found two areas of...

The response of the tropical ocean to global climate change and the extent of sea ice in the glacial nordic seas belong to the great controversies in paleoclimatology. Our new reconstruction of peak glacial sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the Atlantic is based on census counts of planktic foraminifera, using the Maximum Similarity Technique Version 28 (SIMMAX-28) modern analog technique with 947 modern analog samples and 119 well-dated sediment cores. Our study compares two slightly different scenarios of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), the Environmental Processes of the Ice Age: Land, Oceans, Glaciers (EPILOG), and Glacial Atlantic Ocean Mapping (GLAMAP 2000) time slices. The comparison shows that the maximum LGM cooling in the Southern Hemisphere...

Growth and reproduction of the understory palm Geonoma schottiana Mart. in the gallery forest in Central Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Sampaio,Maurício Bonesso; Scariot,Aldicir.
To understand the growth and reproduction of the palm Geonoma schottiana in the gallery forest of Central Brazil, two hypotheses were raised: (i) production of leaves and reproductive structures are concentrated in the period of the year with high light availability; (ii) leaf production and reproductive activity are related to plant length. However, it is expected that senility effects will cause fast reduction in growth and reproduction activities in higher plants. Growth and reproduction were concentrated in the dry season, when insolation is higher than in the wet season, suggesting that leaf and inflorescence production on G. schottiana in the gallery forest understory is more limited by light than by soil humidity. As the individual grows, leaf...

Harvesting Season and Botanical Origin Interferes in Production and Nutritional Composition of Bee Pollen Anais da ABC (AABC)
NEGRÃO,ADRIANA F.; ORSI,RICARDO O..
ABSTRACT We aimed to evaluate the frequency of bee pollen production, its botanical origin and chemical composition when collected in different seasons. Our results indicate that higher proteins (22.80 ± 3.09%) and flavonoids (2789.87 ± 1396.00 μg 100g-1) levels were obtained in the winter season, which also showed greater pollen production (134.50 ± 35.70 grams) and predominance of the Myrtaceae family. As for spring we found high concentrations of lipids (4.62 ± 2.26%) and low ash content (2.22 ± 0.39%). Regarding the amino acid composition and vitamin C content, we found no differences between the averages throughout the seasons. Our results highlight the importance of understanding not only the botanical origin and the chemical composition of bee...

Hawkmoth fauna (Sphingidae, Lepidoptera) in a semi-deciduous rainforest remnant: composition, temporal fluctuations, and new records for northeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
PRIMO,LUIS M.; DUARTE,JOSÉ A.; MACHADO,ISABEL C..
We carried out a qualitative and quantitative inventory of the hawkmoth fauna (Sphingidae) of an area of semi-deciduous seasonal rainforest in the state of Pernambuco (Tapacurá Ecological Station), northeastern Brazil. Hawkmoths were sampled monthly from October 2004 to February 2007 (27 months). We recorded 31 species from 16 genera, three tribes, and three families. Macroglossinae was the most abundant subfamily and represented ca. 71% of all species. Out of the 277 individuals collected, 88.4% were males. Five new records were made for northeastern Brazil: Enyo gorgon (Cramer, 1777), Perigonia stulta (Herrich-Schäffer, [1854]), Eupyrrhoglossum sagra (Poey, 1832), Nyceryx coffaeae (Walker, 1856) and Xylophanes chiron (Drury, 1773). Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus (HRSV) is recognized as the single most important pathogen responsible for acute viral infection of the lower respiratory tract in young children. In this study, 84 samples from children under two years of age presenting acute respiratory symptoms were obtained from September 2000 to November 2001. Analysis by immunofluorescence and reverse-transcription followed by PCR, revealed that 18% (15/84) of all the samples were positive for HRSV, in which 80% (12/15) of the cases was observed in children under six months of age and the subgroups A and B co-circulated in the studied period. These are the first data obtained for Botucatu city and seasonality is evident by the higher circulation of the virus between May and July.

Hydropeaking effects of on the diet of a Neotropical fish community Neotropical Ichthyology
Gandini,Cíntia Veloso; Sampaio,Francisco Alexandre Costa; Pompeu,Paulo Santos.
The impact of hydropeaking by dams is still poorly understood. Studying the diet of fish subjected to that variation allows us to test the following hypotheses: 1) seasonal and daily changes in river flow, causes changes in the use of the feeding resources; 2) species presenting larger differences in diet between seasons will be those with larger diet changes due to hydropeaking; 3) hydropeaking effects will be more evident in species feeding on items that can be more affected by variable flows. Fish diet collected from the Grande River, downstream from Itutinga Dam, in January and July 2010, was characterized by the feeding index (IA). NMDS, ANOSIM and SIMPER analyses were used to compare the diets under different hydropeaking and season. Relationship...

Impact d’une obligation de débarquement sur les dynamiques couplées écosystème-pêcheurs : approche par modélisation individu-centrée appliquée à la Manche orientale ArchiMer
Bourdaud, Pierre.
The objective of this thesis was to anticipate the effects if the EU Landing Obligation (LO) implemented since the beginning of 2015 in the Eastern English Channel (EEC). To achieve these objectives, it was planned to: i) better understand seasonal spatial distribution of commercial species using on-board commercial vessels observation data, ii) compare them with the fine scale fishing effort distribution of EEC bottom otter trawlers (OTB), and iii) develop an individual-based model of fleet-dynamics, DSVM, to be integrated within the ecosystem model OSMOSE to simulate a LO. The usefulness of on-board observation data was proved for a main part of a species sample, using validation from the literature and a geostatistical indicator. Then the comparison of...

Importância de diferentes microhabitats no comportamento de forrageio por presas do mico-leão-preto, Leontopithecus chrysopygus (Mikan) (Mammalia, Callitrichidae) Zoologia
Passos,Fernando C.; Alho,Cleber J. R..
Prey foraging behavior in the Black Lion Tamarin, Leontopithecus chrysopygus (Mikan, 1823) was observed in the Caetetus Ecological Station, southeastern Brazil, during 550 hours of direct observations between December 1993 and February 1995. The scan sampling method was used to gather data. These tamarins use manipulative, specific-site foraging behavior. When searching for animal prey items, they examine a variety of microhabitats. The most important microhabitat used for prey foraging behavior was tree cavities (41% of the foraging observations), but palm trees (22%), bamboo (12%), vines (11%), bark (5%), seed pods of the "jequitiba" tree (4%), other places (3%) and epiphytes (2%) were also observed. Animal preys were frequently captured in understory...
